In 2012 I was part of a team at the top of our game. We had just secured the largest deal in our company’s history, the latest in a series of contract awards that had helped establish us as a major player in the emerging integrated facilities management sector. As a team within the company we had learned together how to win in the highly competitive outsourcing market - how to balance internal challenges and limitations with customer demands to create services and commercial solutions that worked.

It should have been a time of celebration and reflection, but to say I was unfulfilled would be an understatement.

I was proud of the journey we’d been on, the success we’d had, and the impact on the company. But my motivation was at rock bottom. A relentless stream of major bids, ever-increasing pressure and minimal support from leadership had left me in a rut. I was disillusioned with where the company was going, and unsatisfied with my role.

Something had to change for me.

My career had led me from finance through commercial roles to new interests in business model and service design, strategy and change. However, the skills and knowledge I had developed in these areas were going untapped by my employer. Every time I tried to move on to a new role within the company I was pulled back to support the latest major bid opportunity. Trapped by my and our team’s success, I had been pigeon-holed as someone I didn’t want to be.

So, in 2013, I resigned, immediately after delivering the latest proposal I had been working on.

I didn’t leave with a plan. I needed - and wanted - the freedom to explore what I could do, to find a niche for myself doing work I believed in with leaders and organisations that inspired me.

I read voraciously. I took courses. I went to events. I said ‘yes’ to lots of different projects. I worked with a huge range of companies in many different sectors. I tried things out and crafted my approach and toolkit.

After a few years my authentic role began to emerge, and I really got to grips with how I can best help people. It’s been a journey with its highs and lows, but I wouldn’t have missed the clarity it has brought for the world. I know who I am and what I can do.

Now I help mission-led businesses thrive, by bringing clarity to their future ambition, focus to their strategy, and alignment to their organisation.

Together we’ve achieved some amazing outcomes.

If you’d like to explore how I could help you, please get in touch, I’d love to talk.
